1. Our Core Philosophy: Local-First Privacy
YellowSquared is an independent software studio built on the belief that software should be fast, focused, and respectful of your autonomy. We build our tools with a local-first architecture:
- Your content stays on your device: Your photos, edits, scouted locations, habit logs, custom calculations, and personal preferences remain stored in your device’s local storage.
- No selling or renting of personal data: We do not sell, rent, broker, or monetize your personal information or content to third parties.
- No background tracking: None of our applications track your location in the background or monitor your activity across other apps or websites.
- No unnecessary accounts: The vast majority of our apps require no account, no email address, and no registration to use all primary features.

3. Device Permissions & Specific Handling
Photos, Media & File Storage
- BatchPad: Requests access to your photo library and file system solely to let you select, crop, pad, watermark, and save images. All image processing, EXIF preservation, and rendering are executed 100% locally on your device using hardware acceleration. No images, thumbnails, or metadata are ever uploaded to any server.
- PhotoSpots: Requests photo library and camera access so you can attach reference photos to your scouted spot pins. These images are stored exclusively in your device’s local application sandbox.
- Timeli: Requests storage access only when you explicitly trigger the export feature to save your moment history as a CSV file to your device or share it via system share sheets.
Camera Access
- Lumet: Requests camera access solely to show a live front-facing camera preview on your screen while using the display as an adjustable color-temperature softbox and lightbox. The video stream is processed in real-time memory on your device; Lumet never records, takes snapshots, saves, or transmits any camera feed.
- PhotoSpots: Requests camera access strictly to let you capture reference photos for scouted locations directly within the app.
Location & GPS Data
- PhotoSpots: Requests precise location access (foreground only) while the app is active to let you pin scouting locations, compute local sunrise, sunset, and golden hour windows, and calculate real-time 3D sun azimuth and shadow trajectories. All coordinates and spot pins are stored locally in your device’s database.
- Eranorms: Requests approximate or precise location (foreground only) to identify the closest weather and climate stations. The coordinates are transmitted ephemerally to weather and climate data services (such as NOAA or ERA5 backends) to retrieve meteorological observations and historical baselines. These coordinates are not tied to your identity and are not stored in any persistent tracking database.
- Timeli: Allows you to optionally tag a moment log with your current coordinates. Location is only queried upon your explicit action and is saved strictly inside your local database.
- No Background Location: None of our applications request or run background location tracking services.
Sensors & Device Controls
- Lumet: Uses device screen brightness APIs and flashlight/torch hardware controls to provide photography lighting. Uses wake-lock permissions to prevent your screen from sleeping during active lighting sessions.
- PhotoSpots: Uses the device compass / magnetometer to align sun and shadow directions with your real-world camera orientation.
- Timeli: Uses device haptic feedback hardware to provide tactile confirmation when logging moments.
Artificial Intelligence & Natural Language Processing
- Name Scout: Features optional AI-assisted name discovery, sibling pairing, name meaning analysis, and conversational suggestions powered by cloud-based large language models (Google Gemini). When you interact with AI features, the text prompts, search parameters, or custom descriptions you enter are transmitted to our servers and forwarded to Google Gemini to generate the output. These AI requests are handled independently of your account profile. Users should avoid entering sensitive personal identifying information into open-ended AI prompts.
4. User Accounts & Data Synchronization
Most YellowSquared applications do not offer or require user accounts. The exception is:
- Name Scout: Offers optional user authentication (via Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In) specifically to enable partner pairing and synchronized favorite name lists between two devices.
- Information Collected for Accounts: When signing in, we receive a secure authentication identifier and the email address provided by your identity provider (or Apple’s private relay email). We use this strictly to maintain your session and sync your saved name lists across paired devices.
- Account Deletion: You may delete your Name Scout account and all associated synchronized lists at any time directly within the application settings, or by emailing hi@yellowsquared.us. Upon deletion, all associated account records and shared lists are permanently removed from our servers.
5. Third-Party Services & Infrastructure
We work with select third-party service providers to deliver essential app functions, process payments, and display advertisements on free tiers:
In-App Purchases & Subscriptions
We use RevenueCat to manage in-app purchases and validate Pro subscriptions across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. RevenueCat processes anonymous purchase tokens, device identifiers, and transaction metadata to unlock premium features. No credit card or billing details are ever seen or stored by YellowSquared.
Advertising (Ad-Supported Apps Only)
Free versions of BatchPad and Name Scout display advertisements provided by Google AdMob to help support development.
- On iOS, we adhere strictly to Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework and request your explicit permission before serving personalized ads. If you decline, only contextual (non-personalized) ads will be displayed.
- Google AdMob may collect and process device identifiers, IP addresses, and interaction data as described in Google’s policies.
- Apps with no advertising: Lumet, Eranorms, Pointsuno, PhotoSpots, Timeli, In Season, and Tempo contain zero ads.
Google Advertising & Privacy Policy
Maps & Meteorological Providers
PhotoSpots and Eranorms use map rendering and meteorological APIs (including OpenStreetMap contributors and NOAA/climate reanalysis data) to render maps and deliver historical weather charts. Standard network requests (containing IP addresses and coordinate bounding boxes) are processed by these services to return the requested map tiles or weather observations.
Generative AI & Cloud LLM Services (Google Gemini)
We integrate Google Generative AI (Gemini) to power natural language discovery, creative name generation, and contextual insights in Name Scout.
- Information Transmitted: Only the explicit prompt text, query criteria, or name parameters you submit to an AI feature are transmitted for processing. We do not transmit account credentials, billing details, or unrelated device data to the AI model.
- Google’s Data Collection & Processing: Data transmitted to Google Gemini is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy and the Google Generative AI Additional Terms of Service. Under Google’s standard API terms, prompts and generated outputs may be processed and stored by Google for safety monitoring, abuse detection, and model improvement in accordance with their policies.
- Our Commitment: YellowSquared does not sell your AI prompts, broker your text queries to data brokers, or use your prompt text for ad targeting.
Platform Services (Apple & Google)
Our applications utilize standard operating system services provided by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android) for app installation, platform security, optional crash diagnostics (if enabled by you in system settings), and App Store / Google Play In-App Billing.
6. Data Retention & Deletion
Because our apps store your data locally on your device (using SQLite, SharedPreferences, Hive, or browser LocalStorage), you retain full custody of your information:
- Local App Data: You can delete all locally stored data, photos, pins, logs, and settings at any time by uninstalling the application or using your device’s “Clear Storage / Clear App Data” system setting.
- Web App Data (Tempo): You can clear custom cities and timezone dials at any time by clearing your browser cache and local storage for
yellowsquared.us. - Server Data (Name Scout): If you have created a Name Scout account, your synced list data is retained until you choose to delete your account. You can request immediate, permanent deletion at any time via in-app controls or by emailing hi@yellowsquared.us.
- Support Communications: If you contact us via email at hi@yellowsquared.us, we retain your message and email address only as long as necessary to answer your inquiry and provide customer support.
7. Children’s Privacy
Our applications and websites are intended for a general audience and are not directed to children under the age of 13 (or under 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information from children. If we discover that a child has provided us with personal information, we will immediately delete that data from our servers. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hi@yellowsquared.us.
8. Your Rights & Choices (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA & Global)
Depending on your jurisdiction (such as California or the European Economic Area), you have specific privacy rights regarding your personal information:
- Right of Access & Portability: You have the right to know what personal information we hold about you and to receive a copy of that data. (For local-first apps like Timeli, built-in CSV export tools allow you to export your data directly).
- Right to Deletion / Erasure: You have the right to request the deletion of any personal information held by us.
- Right to Opt-Out: You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time by declining the tracking prompt on iOS (ATT) or adjusting your Google Ads personalization settings on Android.
- Permission Controls: You can grant or revoke app permissions (such as Location, Camera, or Photos) at any time through your mobile device’s system Settings menu.
- Non-Discrimination: We will never discriminate against you, deny you services, or charge you different prices for exercising your privacy rights.
9. Security Safeguards
We implement physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect any data we process. All network communication between our applications and servers is encrypted in transit using industry-standard Transport Layer Security (TLS/HTTPS). Where credentials or sensitive identifiers are stored locally (such as login tokens for Name Scout), we use platform-level secure storage mechanisms (iOS Keychain and Android Keystore/EncryptedSharedPreferences).
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our applications, legal requirements, or operational practices. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this policy and posting the revised document on yellowsquared.us/privacy_policy.
